Starting on August 17, 2018, yes almost a year and a half before the end of the decade, I started the chart. Starting with over 130 albums that I thought had any shot at the top 100, I measured each album against all other albums in an album vs. album showdown. Here is an example of how it worked; when I listened to Art Angles by Grimes I went down that entire column giving it a score of 0 if it beat the album on the left and a score of 1 if the album on the left won.
I listened to one album every weekday minus holidays and a few breaks here and there from August 2018 to November 2019. Mostly I would listen on my way to and from work which worked very well as most of the time I could get halfway through in the morning and finish in the afternoon. The pain was going down that column everyday making 130+ decisions.
One time through was not going to give me the results I wanted and luckily I knew this from the beginning. The reason it took me a year and a half to complete the entire process was because there were multiple rounds. Round 1 was the first listen, the 130+ albums. Once I locked those into place I took the top 50 into round 2 with a fresh chart and listened to and scored them all again. Then the top 25 was round 3 and the final round was the top ten! My favorite part about the whole process was seeing how much things changed based on these repeat listens. The best albums truly got the chance to rise to the top.
